Overview

Why this route works

This is the best short route if you want a real China trip without a multi-city marathon. Shanghai gives you an easy arrival, the Bund and strong food; Hangzhou slows the pace with West Lake, temples and tea country. The one-hour train makes the pair feel like one trip rather than two separate stops.

The plan below is a route, not a rigid schedule. Keep the order, but move a museum or a meal if weather, jet lag or a sold-out ticket changes the day. Every transfer includes a buffer.

This route suits you if

  • You have 4–5 days and want two places without rushing.
  • You want a mix of city food and lake/temple scenery.
  • You are happy to take a one-hour train and change hotels once.

Choose another route if

  • You want the Great Wall, Xi'an or a grand first tour.
  • You need a beach or a mountain hiking trip.

Before you book

The booking order that prevents most problems

Do these in order. Entry eligibility and the hard-to-get tickets matter more than a cheaper hotel.

1

Choose the right airport pair

Arrive PVG or SHA, leave from HGH if possible; otherwise return to Shanghai by train (about 1 hour).

Entry rules
2

Book the Shanghai–Hangzhou train

Trains are frequent and take about 45–60 minutes. Book with your passport and arrive 30–45 minutes early.

3

Stay near the sights

Shanghai: People's Square or the Bund. Hangzhou: West Lake east side or near Longxiangqiao metro.

Where to stay
4

Book West Lake and Lingyin

The lake is free, but boats and Lingyin ticketed areas are separate. Check current opening and ticket rules.

5

Set up payments and maps

Alipay/WeChat Pay and a translation app make the trip smoother; keep a physical card as backup.

Payments

Day by day

5-day plan

Each day has one main purpose. Transfer days are deliberately light; do not add a second city.

01

Day 1 · Shanghai

Arrive in Shanghai and walk the Bund

Land, check in and see the skyline after dark.

Arrival
From PVG or SHA, take the metro or a taxi/Didi to People's Square or the Bund. Check in and keep the registration slip.
Evening
Walk the Bund from Waibaidu Bridge south toward Yan'an Road; stay for the skyline lights.
Book
Confirm the Hangzhou train and the West Lake boat/ Lingyin tickets for the next days.
02

Day 2 · Shanghai

Yu Garden, the French Concession and Pudong

Old city, plane trees and one skyline view.

Morning
Yu Garden and the City God Temple bazaar; book the garden and go early.
Afternoon
Former French Concession: Wukang Road, Anfu Road and a long lunch.
Evening
Cross to Pudong for the Shanghai Tower deck or a riverfront walk; one skyline view is enough.
03

Day 3 · Shanghai → Hangzhou

Train to Hangzhou and West Lake

A one-hour train and a slow afternoon on the lake.

Morning
Take a high-speed train from Shanghai Hongqiao to Hangzhou East (about 45–60 minutes). Check in near the lake.
Afternoon
Walk the Su Causeway or take a short boat; start at Broken Bridge and keep the route flexible.
Evening
Dinner near West Lake and an early night; the lake is best before the crowds.
04

Day 4 · Hangzhou

Lingyin Temple, Longjing tea and the Grand Canal

Temple paths, tea hills and a canal bridge.

Morning
Lingyin Temple and Feilai Peak early; dress respectfully and allow 2–3 hours.
Afternoon
Longjing tea village or Meijiawu for tea and a hillside walk; then Gongchen Bridge on the Grand Canal.
Evening
A final Hangzhou meal; pack for the airport or train.
05

Day 5 · Hangzhou

Depart from Hangzhou or Shanghai

A short morning and a simple airport transfer.

Morning
A final lake walk or breakfast; check out. HGH is about 45–60 minutes from West Lake by metro/taxi.
If returning to Shanghai
Take the train back (about 1 hour) and allow at least 3 hours before an international flight from PVG.

Where to stay

Choose the area before the hotel

A well-placed hotel saves more time than a cheaper room near the airport.

Shanghai

2 nights

The Bund, old city, French Concession and the easiest arrival.

Stay: People's Square or the Bund

Hangzhou

2 nights

West Lake, Lingyin Temple and tea country at a slower pace.

Stay: West Lake east side or Longxiangqiao

What to eat

Meals worth planning around

Book the one special meal; keep the rest spontaneous.

Shanghai xiaolongbao

Soup dumplings and shengjianbao; go to a busy local shop before 09:00.

Hangzhou classics

Dongpo pork, Longjing shrimp and West Lake fish; order one or two rather than all three.

Longjing tea

Buy tea at a reputable shop or tea village; taste before buying.

Getting around

Transfers, trains and city transport

The route assumes public transport plus Didi for the last mile. Book the long legs first.

Shanghai arrival

PVG or SHA to People's Square by metro or taxi; allow 45–60 minutes.

Shanghai → Hangzhou

High-speed rail, 45–60 minutes. Book with your passport.

Hangzhou local

Metro plus taxi/Didi; West Lake is walkable but large. Use a boat or bus for one leg.

Departure

HGH is 45–60 minutes from West Lake. If returning to Shanghai, add the train and 3 hours at PVG.

Budget

What drives the cost

Prices change; use these as the categories to check, not a fixed daily total.

Hotels

Two nights in each city; West Lake views cost more.

Rail

One short high-speed ticket; book early for a convenient departure.

Attractions

Yu Garden, one skyline deck, Lingyin and a West Lake boat are the main extras.

Common mistakes

What to avoid on this route

  • Trying to add Beijing

Five days is not enough for Beijing and Shanghai; keep the route compact.

  • Staying far from West Lake

The lake is the point; a remote hotel adds daily taxi time.

  • Scheduling Lingyin at midday

Go early; the temple and tour groups build quickly.

  • Booking a same-day return to Shanghai

If your flight is from PVG, return the night before or allow a large buffer.

FAQ

Questions before you commit

Is 5 days enough for Shanghai and Hangzhou?

Yes for a short break: two nights in each city and one 1-hour train. You will not see everything, but you get a real sense of both.

Should I stay in Shanghai or Hangzhou first?

Start in Shanghai for the easier international arrival, then finish in Hangzhou for a calmer last day. If your flight is from Shanghai, reverse it.

Is West Lake free?

The lake and most of the shoreline are free. Boats, some gardens and Lingyin Temple are ticketed; check current prices and opening hours.

Can I visit Hangzhou as a day trip?

Yes, but you will spend most of the day on trains and see only the lake. One night is much better.

What if it rains?

West Lake is atmospheric in light rain. Carry a rain shell and swap an outdoor boat for a tea house or the Grand Canal.

Is this route good for a layover?

Only if you have at least 3 full days. A 24-hour layover is better spent in Shanghai alone.
