Overview

Why this route works

This route is for scenery, not city-hopping. Zhangjiajie needs at least two full days for the national park and one for Tianmen, and Guilin/Yangshuo needs three or four to allow for rain and river conditions. The order works because Zhangjiajie is the more physically demanding half; Guilin is a softer finish.

The plan below is a route, not a rigid schedule. Keep the order, but move a museum or a meal if weather, jet lag or a sold-out ticket changes the day. Every transfer includes a buffer.

This route suits you if

  • You want the landscape highlights of Hunan and Guangxi in one trip.
  • You can walk steep steps and handle rain, mist and changing visibility.
  • You prefer two bases with day trips to a different hotel every night.

Choose another route if

  • You have limited mobility or a fear of heights.
  • You want a city-and-food trip; use the Chengdu–Chongqing route.

Before you book

The booking order that prevents most problems

Do these in order. Entry eligibility and the hard-to-get tickets matter more than a cheaper hotel.

1

Check the Zhangjiajie park ticket

The national park uses a multi-day ticket and separate cableways/shuttles. Confirm current rules and buy from official channels.

2

Book the Zhangjiajie–Guilin leg

The direct train is long; a flight or a train via Changsha may be faster. Compare door-to-door time before booking.

Rail planning
3

Keep a weather buffer

Mountain views can disappear in cloud. Do not book the Li River cruise for the same day as a long transfer.

Travel calendar
4

Choose bases, not just hotels

Wulingyuan for the national park; Guilin for the airport; Yangshuo for the river and countryside.

Where to stay
5

Pack for rain and stairs

Grip shoes, a light rain shell and a small daypack. Cable cars and glass bridges have separate queues and rules.

Health and safety

Day by day

10-day plan

Each day has one main purpose. Transfer days are deliberately light; do not add a second city.

01

Day 1 · Wulingyuan

Arrive in Zhangjiajie and transfer to Wulingyuan

Land, transfer to the park gate and rest.

Arrival
From DYG, take a taxi or pre-booked transfer to Wulingyuan (about 40–60 minutes). Check in near the park gate.
Evening
Walk the town, buy snacks and water, and check the park map and weather forecast.
Book
Confirm the multi-day park ticket, cableway slots and the route for the first full day.
02

Day 2 · Wulingyuan

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park: Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain

The classic pillars and the first big viewpoints.

Morning
Enter the park early and take the shuttle to the Yuanjiajie area. Walk the viewpoints before the tour groups arrive.
Afternoon
Continue to Tianzi Mountain for the ridge views; use the cableway or shuttle to save legs.
Tip
The park is large and the shuttle queues build. Carry water and a packed lunch.
03

Day 3 · Wulingyuan

Tianmen Mountain and the glass walkway

A cable car, cliff paths and a very different landscape.

Morning
Go to Tianmen Mountain early; the cable car is the main attraction and queues grow. Walk the cliff paths and glass sections if open.
Afternoon
Return to Wulingyuan or Zhangjiajie city; rest rather than adding another hike.
Book
Tianmen tickets are timed; check whether your route includes the cableway and the escalators.
04

Day 4 · Wulingyuan

Grand Canyon glass bridge or Baofeng Lake

Choose one secondary sight and keep the afternoon flexible.

Option A
Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon glass bridge: a short visit with a timed ticket; check the weather and closing rules.
Option B
Baofeng Lake: a calm boat trip between the peaks, easier on the legs and good in light rain.
Evening
Pack for the transfer; buy train/flight snacks and confirm the next day's pickup.
05

Day 5 · Guilin

Transfer to Guilin

A long travel day, then an easy evening by the river.

Transfer
Take the train or flight to Guilin. The direct train is long (roughly 6–7 hours); a flight via Changsha or a direct flight may be faster. Check 12306 and current schedules.
Evening
Check in near the city centre, walk the Two Rivers and Four Lakes area, and eat Guilin rice noodles.
06

Day 6 · Yangshuo

Li River cruise to Yangshuo

The classic karst journey, with the afternoon free.

Morning
Take the Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo (about 4 hours). Book the official cruise and confirm the pier transfer.
Afternoon
Check in at Yangshuo, walk the riverside and rest.
Evening
Beer fish and a walk through West Street; the side lanes are quieter.
07

Day 7 · Yangshuo

Yulong River by bamboo raft or bike

A slow countryside day between the peaks.

Morning
Cycle the Yulong River loop or take a bamboo raft; start early for light and fewer crowds.
Afternoon
Village lunch and a café; return before the tour buses.
Tip
Check raft rules and weather; heavy rain can close the river.
08

Day 8 · Yangshuo → Guilin

Longji Rice Terraces

A long day trip to the terraces, then back to Guilin.

Morning
Transfer to Longji (about 2.5–3 hours). Walk Ping'an or Dazhai with a local guide; the paths are steep.
Afternoon
Return to Guilin in the late afternoon; check in near the centre for the airport.
Tip
Do not combine Longji with a Guilin city sight; the road time is the constraint.
09

Day 9 · Guilin

Guilin city and a flexible day

Elephant Trunk Hill, Reed Flute Cave or a rest day.

Option A
Elephant Trunk Hill and Reed Flute Cave; both are short visits and easy by taxi/Didi.
Option B
Keep the day free: a long lunch, a river walk and a massage. This is the buffer for weather or a delayed transfer.
Evening
Pack and confirm the airport transfer for Day 10.
10

Day 10 · Guilin

Depart from Guilin

A short morning and a generous airport buffer.

Morning
Breakfast, check out and go to KWL. The airport is about 45–60 minutes from the centre.
Airport
Arrive 3 hours before an international flight. Keep the passport and any exit documents accessible.

Where to stay

Choose the area before the hotel

A well-placed hotel saves more time than a cheaper room near the airport.

Zhangjiajie

4 nights

National park, Tianmen and the glass bridge; base at Wulingyuan.

Stay: Wulingyuan, near the park gate

Guilin

3 nights

Li River gateway, the post-Longji night and an easier airport transfer.

Stay: City centre near the river

Yangshuo

2 nights

Karst countryside, river and cycling.

Stay: Yangshuo town or a riverside village

What to eat

Meals worth planning around

Book the one special meal; keep the rest spontaneous.

Guilin rice noodles

A breakfast staple; mix in the pickles and chilli before eating.

Beer fish

Yangshuo's signature dish; share it and order a vegetable.

Hunan food in Zhangjiajie

Sanxiaguo, smoked pork and rice noodles; ask for less chilli if needed.

Getting around

Transfers, trains and city transport

The route assumes public transport plus Didi for the last mile. Book the long legs first.

Arrive Zhangjiajie

DYG to Wulingyuan by taxi or pre-booked transfer, 40–60 minutes.

Zhangjiajie → Guilin

Direct train is long; compare a flight via Changsha. Book with buffer and check 12306.

Guilin → Yangshuo

Li River cruise or road transfer, 1–1.5 hours. Longji is another 2.5–3 hours.

Depart Guilin

KWL is 45–60 minutes from the centre; allow extra at peak times.

Budget

What drives the cost

Prices change; use these as the categories to check, not a fixed daily total.

Park tickets

Multi-day park ticket plus cableways/shuttles; Tianmen and the glass bridge are separate.

Transfers

The long Zhangjiajie–Guilin leg and Longji day trip are the main transport costs.

Hotels

Wulingyuan and Yangshuo are good value; Guilin city is convenient for the airport.

Common mistakes

What to avoid on this route

  • Only one day in the national park

The park is huge; two full days is the minimum for Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain.

  • Scheduling the Li River on arrival day

Flight or train delays can cost the cruise. Keep the river for a full day.

  • Staying in Zhangjiajie city

Wulingyuan saves 40–60 minutes each way to the park gate.

  • Ignoring rain

Cloud can hide the peaks. Build a flexible day and carry a rain shell.

FAQ

Questions before you commit

How many days do you need in Zhangjiajie?

At least two full days for the national park, plus one for Tianmen Mountain. Three to four nights in Wulingyuan is a comfortable base.

Is the glass bridge worth it?

It is a short, ticketed experience with big views. Go only if the weather is clear and you are comfortable with heights; otherwise choose Baofeng Lake.

How do I get from Zhangjiajie to Guilin?

The direct train is long. Compare a flight via Changsha or a direct flight; check current schedules and allow a buffer.

Should I stay in Guilin or Yangshuo?

Yangshuo for the river and countryside; Guilin for the airport and cruise start. This route uses both.

What if it rains?

Keep one flexible day. The Li River and Longji views are weather-dependent; a rainy day is a good time for a cooking class, a cave or a slower city day.

Is this route suitable for children?

Older children who can handle stairs and long days will enjoy it. Avoid the glass bridge and cliff paths if anyone is afraid of heights.
