Overview

Why this route works

Seven days works when you accept two cities, not four. This route gives Beijing enough time for the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, then uses the 4.5-hour high-speed train to Shanghai for a relaxed riverfront finish. It is the best choice for a one-week leave or a first trip with a long flight at either end.

The plan below is a route, not a rigid schedule. Keep the order, but move a museum or a meal if weather, jet lag or a sold-out ticket changes the day. Every transfer includes a buffer.

This route suits you if

  • You have one week and want two strong cities rather than a rushed grand tour.
  • You prefer trains to internal flights and want a simple open-jaw route.
  • You want one big sight per day with time for neighbourhoods and food.

Choose another route if

  • Xi'an or the Terracotta Army is a must; use the 10-day classic route instead.
  • You want nature, mountains or a slower countryside itinerary.

Before you book

The booking order that prevents most problems

Do these in order. Entry eligibility and the hard-to-get tickets matter more than a cheaper hotel.

1

Book an open-jaw ticket

Fly into Beijing and out of Shanghai. A return ticket from Beijing adds a 4.5-hour train back on your last day.

2

Reserve Forbidden City and Tiananmen

Both need advance reservations tied to your passport. Do this before booking non-refundable hotels.

Entry rules
3

Book the Beijing–Shanghai train early

The 4.5-hour high-speed train is popular. Book on 12306 or an official channel with the passport you will carry.

Rail planning
4

Choose two well-placed hotels

Beijing: Dongcheng. Shanghai: People's Square or the French Concession. Do not stay near the airports to save money.

Where to stay
5

Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay

Link a foreign card before landing; keep a physical card and cash as backup.

Payments

Day by day

7-day plan

Each day has one main purpose. Transfer days are deliberately light; do not add a second city.

01

Day 1 · Beijing

Arrive in Beijing

Land, check in and keep the first evening close to the hotel.

Arrival
Take the Airport Express or a taxi/Didi to Dongcheng. Check in and keep the hotel registration slip.
Evening
A short hutong walk and a simple meal. Sleep at local time; do not schedule a ticketed sight.
Book
Confirm Day 2 reservations and the Great Wall transfer for Day 3.
02

Day 2 · Beijing

Tiananmen, Forbidden City and Jingshan

The imperial core on foot, with the best roof view at the end.

Morning
Tiananmen Square with passport and reservation, then the Forbidden City. Allow 45–60 minutes for security and 3 hours inside.
Afternoon
Exit north to Jingshan Park for the view, then lunch in the hutongs.
Evening
Houhai or Nanluoguxiang, then Beijing duck. Book the restaurant.
Tip
The Forbidden City is closed on most Mondays. Carry the physical passport used for the booking.
03

Day 3 · Beijing

Great Wall at Mutianyu

An early start, a restored wall section and an easy evening.

Morning
Pre-booked transfer to Mutianyu; arrive near opening and walk between towers before the groups.
Afternoon
Return by mid-afternoon. Rest or visit the Temple of Heaven park.
Book
Check current Mutianyu tickets and transfer arrangements; wear grip shoes and carry water.
04

Day 4 · Beijing → Shanghai

Temple of Heaven, then train to Shanghai

A light morning and a 4.5-hour high-speed train.

Morning
Temple of Heaven park early, then collect luggage and go to Beijing South.
Transfer
High-speed train to Shanghai, about 4.5 hours. Arrive 45–60 minutes early and use your passport at the gate.
Evening
Check in, walk to the Bund after dark and eat near the hotel.
05

Day 5 · Shanghai

Yu Garden and the French Concession

Old-city gardens, then the plane-tree streets and a long lunch.

Morning
Yu Garden and the City God Temple bazaar. Book the garden and go early.
Afternoon
Former French Concession: Wukang Road, Anfu Road and a long lunch.
Evening
Suzhou Creek or the Bund for the skyline lights.
06

Day 6 · Shanghai

Shanghai Museum and Pudong

One museum and one skyline view, with time to pack.

Morning
Shanghai Museum on People's Square; reserve the free ticket and allow 2–3 hours.
Afternoon
Cross to Pudong for the Shanghai Tower deck or a riverfront walk. One observation deck is enough.
Evening
Dinner in the French Concession and pack before the final morning.
07

Day 7 · Shanghai

Depart from Shanghai

A short morning and a generous airport buffer.

Morning
Breakfast and a neighbourhood walk; check out and store luggage if the flight is late.
Airport
PVG is 45–60 minutes from People's Square by metro or taxi. Arrive 3 hours before an international flight.

Where to stay

Choose the area before the hotel

A well-placed hotel saves more time than a cheaper room near the airport.

Beijing

3 nights

Imperial sights, the Great Wall and the strongest first impression.

Stay: Dongcheng, near Line 2 or Line 5

Shanghai

3 nights

A relaxed riverfront finish with museums, food and an easy airport.

Stay: People's Square or the French Concession

What to eat

Meals worth planning around

Book the one special meal; keep the rest spontaneous.

Beijing duck

Book ahead; add one hutong breakfast and one neighbourhood noodle shop.

Shanghai breakfast

Shengjianbao, xiaolongbao and soy milk. Go before 09:00 to a busy local shop.

French Concession cafés

Use one long lunch as a rest day rather than adding another museum.

Getting around

Transfers, trains and city transport

The route assumes public transport plus Didi for the last mile. Book the long legs first.

Arrive Beijing

PEK Airport Express or taxi; PKX Daxing Airport Express. Allow 60–90 minutes to Dongcheng.

Beijing → Shanghai

High-speed rail, about 4.5 hours. Book with your passport and arrive 45–60 minutes early.

City transport

Metro plus Didi/Alipay in both cities. Keep the hotel name and address in Chinese.

Budget

What drives the cost

Prices change; use these as the categories to check, not a fixed daily total.

Hotels

Six nights in two city centres. Location saves more time than a cheaper airport hotel.

Rail

One 4.5-hour high-speed ticket each; book early for the best departure times.

Attractions

Forbidden City, Mutianyu, Yu Garden, Shanghai Museum and one observation deck.

Common mistakes

What to avoid on this route

  • Trying to add Xi'an

Three cities in seven days leaves no room for the Great Wall or a bad-weather day.

  • Booking a return flight from Beijing

The train back from Shanghai wastes the last day; book an open-jaw ticket.

  • Leaving the Great Wall to the last day

Weather and traffic can derail departure day. Keep the wall in the middle.

  • Skipping reservations

Forbidden City and Tiananmen can be unavailable on the day; book both before hotels.

Alternatives

If this route is not quite right

Add Xi'an

Use the 10-day classic route with Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai.

FAQ

Questions before you commit

Is 7 days enough for Beijing and Shanghai?

Yes, with three nights in each city and one 4.5-hour train. You get two full days in Beijing and two in Shanghai, plus arrival and departure days.

Should I fly or take the train between Beijing and Shanghai?

The high-speed train is usually easier: city centre to city centre in about 4.5 hours. A flight saves little after airport transfers and is more prone to delays.

Can I see the Great Wall without a tour?

Yes. Use a pre-booked transfer or public transport to Mutianyu and buy the shuttle/cable car separately. Check current ticket and reservation rules before you go.

Which city should I visit first?

Start in Beijing. The time change and the big imperial sights are easier to handle at the start, and Shanghai is a softer landing for the final days.

Is this route good for families?

Yes, but reduce the walking. Use a private transfer to Mutianyu, take the cable car, and choose one museum rather than two.

What if the Forbidden City is sold out?

Try the official release again, or swap in the Temple of Heaven and Jingshan. Do not buy from unofficial resellers.
