Chongqing

A vertical city where two rivers meet, monorails thread through buildings and the best views come after dark.

Overview

Chongqing at a glance

Built across steep hills where two major rivers meet, Chongqing feels vertical, cinematic and constantly surprising. Layered streets, dramatic bridges and late-night hotpot create an urban experience unlike any other Chinese city.

Two or three days is enough for the classic night views, the old town and a river crossing. Add a day for the Dazu rock carvings or a Yangtze cruise if your route continues downstream.

Getting around

Getting around Chongqing

Arrival, payment and the everyday transport choices that make the biggest difference.

Airport

Chongqing Jiangbei (CKG) is north of the city, with metro and rail links. Allow extra time for the hills and traffic on the way in.

Rail stations

Chongqing North and Chongqing West serve different high-speed routes. Check the full station name on your 12306 ticket; they are far apart.

Metro

The metro is reliable but the city's levels can make transfers long. Use a transport code or ticket; expect stairs and long walks in some stations.

Taxi & Didi

Use an official rank or app. Give the exact address and level; drivers may not find a hillside entrance without a landmark.

Stay

Where to stay in Chongqing

Choose the neighbourhood first, then the room. These areas trade atmosphere against transport time in different ways.

Jiefangbei

First-timers and night views

Central, walkable to Hongya Cave and the river, with the densest hotel and food choice.

Busy and noisy; check whether the room faces the street.

Nan'an

Skyline views

Across the river, with quieter hotels and the classic view back toward the city.

Great views; allow taxi or metro time for central sights.

Guanyinqiao

Food and local life

A lively district north of the centre with restaurants and shopping, less touristy than Jiefangbei.

Good value; check metro access.

Shapingba

Rail access and local atmosphere

Near Chongqing West and Ciqikou, with a younger, everyday feel.

Convenient for trains; farther from the classic night views.

FAQ

Chongqing travel questions

How many days do I need in Chongqing?

Two days covers Hongya Cave, Liziba, Ciqikou and a river view. Three days adds the Three Gorges Museum, cableway and a slower food day; add another for Dazu.

Is Chongqing hard to walk?

The hills, stairs and multi-level streets are the challenge, not the distance. Wear shoes with grip, use the metro for long hops and allow more time than a flat city map suggests.

Is Chongqing hotpot too spicy?

It can be very hot. Ask for a split pot, a mild broth (微辣) or a sesame dipping sauce, and order rice or a non-spicy dish alongside. Tell staff about allergies in writing.

Should I take a Yangtze River cruise?

A short city cruise is a convenient way to see the skyline; a multi-day Three Gorges cruise is a separate trip with its own booking. Check the route, cabin and port before paying.

Which airport or station should I use?

Most flights use Jiangbei (CKG). For rail, check whether your train leaves from Chongqing North or West; they serve different routes and are not interchangeable.
