Understand the journey
What this looks like on a real trip
A good first hotel is a base you can reach after a long flight, find in Chinese on a map and check into with your passport.
For hotels, staff handle the required accommodation registration. A stay in a private home or apartment has a separate registration duty. The government has also instructed platforms and operators not to impose unlawful restrictions on foreign guests, although a booking can still fail for ordinary reasons such as sold-out rooms or check-in terms.

Two accommodation paths
The registration step depends on where you sleep, not on how you booked it.
- 01
Hotel
Confirm the address and arrival time; present the original passport at check-in. The hotel registers guests.
- 02
Private stay
Arrange registration with the host or local police as required, within the applicable deadline.
- 03
If check-in fails
Ask the property or booking service for a remedy and keep the passport and reservation ready.
The short answer
Can a foreign visitor stay in a hotel in China?
Yes. Hotels should not unlawfully refuse or restrict guests simply because they hold a foreign passport. Book a place that fits your route, confirm it can process your passport at check-in and read the cancellation policy. Hotels normally handle the required accommodation registration; private stays need a separate registration process.
Read the accommodation-registration ruleBefore you go
- Choose a location near the rail/metro line or sights you will use, not just the cheapest listing on a map.
- Check the exact property address in Chinese, late check-in hours, room occupancy rules and cancellation terms.
- Enter guest names as they appear on passports and bring the original passports for check-in.
- For an apartment or friend's home, arrange the required accommodation registration within the local deadline.
Choose the relevant path
Which situation fits your trip?
A staffed hotel
- If
- You want the simplest arrival and registration process.
- Do this
- Book a property with a staffed check-in at your arrival time; bring the original passport. The hotel submits accommodation registration.
- Watch for
- A booking app's 'international guests welcome' badge is less useful than a direct confirmation of late arrival, address and room terms.
An apartment or private home
- If
- You will stay with a friend, host or in non-hotel accommodation.
- Do this
- Confirm who will submit the foreign guest's accommodation registration within 24 hours of check-in and which local police or online channel is used.
- Watch for
- Do not assume the platform or landlord has registered you. Ask for confirmation from the host or local authority.
A hotel says it cannot check you in
- If
- You have a valid booking but staff appear unfamiliar with a foreign passport.
- Do this
- Ask for a manager, show the booking and passport, and contact the platform while still at the property. Seek a staffed alternative if the issue cannot be solved promptly.
- Watch for
- The official policy opposes unlawful blanket restrictions, but your immediate priority at night is a safe room.

Practical playbooks
01
Select a hotel that works for the itinerary
Do this before comparing only the nightly price.
- 1.Mark the arrival airport or rail station, your first two days of activities and the departure point on a map. Estimate door-to-door transfers, not just straight-line distance.
- 2.Check recent reviews for the precise property and room type: noise, elevator access, late check-in and whether English support matters to you.
- 3.Read the cancellation deadline, taxes, deposit rules, guest count, breakfast and whether the room is prepaid or pay-at-property.
- 4.Save the exact Chinese property name, address, phone number and map pin. Confirm that your arrival time is within reception hours or get written late-arrival instructions.
02
Check in with a foreign passport
Use this on arrival at a hotel or guesthouse.
- 1.Show the original passport for each guest as requested. Ensure the booking name and guest count match the people who will stay.
- 2.Present the booking reference and ask about any deposit or balance before approving a payment. Keep the receipt and confirm how a preauthorisation will be released.
- 3.Let staff complete the required guest registration. Ask for the property's Chinese business card or save its address for taxis and deliveries.
- 4.Before leaving reception, confirm checkout time, Wi-Fi network name and how to contact staff if an issue arises overnight.
03
Register a private stay
Required when your accommodation is not a hotel.
- 1.Ask the host before arrival whether they know the local registration method and who will go with you or submit it.
- 2.Within 24 hours of check-in, register with the local public security organ by the method it accepts. NIA lists local police stations, police offices and foreigner service stations; some cities offer local online channels.
- 3.Bring the passport, the host or property information and any proof the local office asks for. Do not assume another city's online procedure is accepted here.
- 4.Keep evidence that the registration was accepted, especially if you change accommodation or later need an immigration service.
More practical detail
Deposits, room types and late arrival
The cheapest room can become expensive if the property cannot check you in or the room does not fit your group.
- Deposit or preauthorisation
- Many hotels hold a deposit at check-in. Confirm the amount and release time before approving, and keep the receipt.
- Room type and occupancy
- Twin, double and family rooms differ. Confirm the bed setup and maximum occupancy for the people who will actually stay.
- Late arrival
- Confirm reception hours and get written instructions if you will arrive after midnight. A booking confirmation alone may not hold the room.
- Registration
- Hotels register foreign guests. A private stay needs separate registration within 24 hours, arranged by the host or guest; NIA states a warning and a fine of up to CNY 2,000 for missing it.
Show this when words are difficult
Save the relevant line with your address or booking. Show the Chinese text to staff rather than relying on pronunciation.
Late check-in
我已预订房间,航班晚点了,可以办理入住吗?
I have a reservation. My flight was delayed; can I check in?
Private stay
我住在朋友家,在哪里办理住宿登记?
I am staying with a friend. Where do I register my accommodation?
If things go wrong
- If you are stranded late, use a staffed hotel reception or booking platform support to locate an available room; keep your passport and reservation details ready.
- If a private host is unsure about registration, contact the local police station or official city service portal before the deadline.
Common questions
Do hotels register foreign guests with the police?
Yes. Hotels handle the accommodation registration for guests. Private accommodation has a separate guest or host registration requirement.
Do I need my original passport at check-in?
Plan to bring it. Hotels need to verify the identity document used for registration.
Do hotels ask for a deposit?
Many hotels take a deposit or card preauthorisation at check-in, especially for longer stays or higher-category rooms. Confirm the amount and release time before approving, and keep the receipt.
