Overview

Why this route works

Guilin works best when you treat it as a region, not a city. The Li River and Yangshuo are the main event, and Longji adds a very different mountain culture. This route keeps hotel changes to three and leaves a flexible day for weather, which matters more here than on a city trip.

The plan below is a route, not a rigid schedule. Keep the order, but move a museum or a meal if weather, jet lag or a sold-out ticket changes the day. Every transfer includes a buffer.

This route suits you if

  • You want karst scenery, river villages and rice terraces.
  • You are happy to change hotels twice and take a long road transfer.
  • You can walk uneven paths and handle humid weather.

Choose another route if

  • You want cities, museums and nightlife.
  • You have limited mobility or want a pool-and-resort holiday.

Before you book

The booking order that prevents most problems

Do these in order. Entry eligibility and the hard-to-get tickets matter more than a cheaper hotel.

1

Book the Li River cruise

The cruise is the anchor of the trip. Book an official service and confirm the pier transfer; do not leave it to the hotel to improvise on arrival.

2

Choose the right bases

Guilin for the airport, Yangshuo for the river and countryside, Longji for the terraces. Avoid day-tripping Longji from Guilin.

Where to stay
3

Check the weather

River levels and visibility change. Keep one flexible day and pack a rain shell.

Travel calendar
4

Book the Longji transfer

The road is winding and the last section is steep. A pre-booked transfer or small tour is easier than public buses with luggage.

5

Set up payments and a map

Alipay/WeChat Pay, a translation app and an offline map for the countryside.

Day by day

7-day plan

Each day has one main purpose. Transfer days are deliberately light; do not add a second city.

01

Day 1 · Guilin

Arrive in Guilin and see the city riverfront

Land, check in and keep the first day light.

Arrival
From KWL, take a taxi/Didi or airport bus to the city centre (about 45–60 minutes). Check in and keep the registration slip.
Afternoon
Walk the Two Rivers and Four Lakes area or see Elephant Trunk Hill from the riverside.
Evening
Guilin rice noodles and an early night; the cruise leaves early tomorrow.
02

Day 2 · Yangshuo

Li River cruise to Yangshuo

The classic karst journey and a slow afternoon.

Morning
Take the Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo (about 4 hours). Book the official cruise and confirm the pier pickup.
Afternoon
Check in at Yangshuo, walk the riverside and rest.
Evening
Beer fish and West Street; the side lanes are calmer.
03

Day 3 · Yangshuo

Yulong River by bamboo raft or bike

A slow countryside day between the peaks.

Morning
Cycle the Yulong River loop or take a bamboo raft; start early for light and fewer crowds.
Afternoon
Village lunch and a café; return before the tour buses.
Tip
Check raft rules and weather; heavy rain can close the river.
04

Day 4 · Yangshuo

Yangshuo at a slower pace

Cooking class, rock climbing or a free day.

Option A
A half-day cooking class and a market visit; useful if you want to understand the food beyond restaurants.
Option B
Rock climbing or a bike ride to a village; book a local guide and check equipment.
Evening
A final Yangshuo dinner and pack for Longji.
05

Day 5 · Longji

Transfer to Longji and walk the terraces

A winding road, a village base and an afternoon walk.

Morning
Transfer to Longji (about 2.5–3 hours). Leave luggage at the guesthouse and walk the nearest terraces.
Afternoon
Ping'an or Dazhai: choose one area rather than trying to cover both. The paths are steep and can be slippery.
Evening
Stay in a village guesthouse; eat local food and sleep early.
06

Day 6 · Longji → Guilin

Longji sunrise and return to Guilin

An early viewpoint, then back to the city.

Morning
Walk to a viewpoint for sunrise if the weather is clear; otherwise take a slower village walk.
Afternoon
Return to Guilin (about 2.5–3 hours). Check in near the centre and rest.
Evening
A final Guilin meal and pack for the airport.
07

Day 7 · Guilin

Depart from Guilin

A short morning and a generous airport buffer.

Morning
Breakfast and check out; KWL is 45–60 minutes from the centre.
Airport
Arrive 3 hours before an international flight. Keep the passport and any exit documents accessible.

Where to stay

Choose the area before the hotel

A well-placed hotel saves more time than a cheaper room near the airport.

Guilin

1 nights

Airport gateway and the Li River cruise start.

Stay: City centre near the river

Yangshuo

3 nights

Karst countryside, river and cycling.

Stay: Yangshuo town or a riverside village

Longji

2 nights

Rice terraces and village life.

Stay: Ping'an or Dazhai guesthouse

What to eat

Meals worth planning around

Book the one special meal; keep the rest spontaneous.

Guilin rice noodles

A breakfast staple; mix in the pickles and chilli.

Beer fish

Yangshuo's signature dish; share it.

Longji village food

Bamboo rice, smoked pork and local vegetables; expect simple guesthouse menus.

Getting around

Transfers, trains and city transport

The route assumes public transport plus Didi for the last mile. Book the long legs first.

Arrive Guilin

KWL to the city centre by taxi/Didi or airport bus, 45–60 minutes.

Li River

Cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo, about 4 hours. Confirm the pier transfer.

Yangshuo → Longji

Road transfer, 2.5–3 hours; winding and slow in bad weather.

Longji → Guilin

Another 2.5–3 hours. Keep the last night in Guilin for the airport.

Budget

What drives the cost

Prices change; use these as the categories to check, not a fixed daily total.

Cruise

The Li River cruise is the main fixed cost; book official and check what is included.

Transfers

Longji and the cruise pier are the main extras; pre-book to avoid taxi bargaining.

Guesthouses

Longji is simple and good value; Yangshuo has a wide range.

Common mistakes

What to avoid on this route

  • Day-tripping Longji from Guilin

The road is 2.5–3 hours each way; staying one or two nights is better.

  • Scheduling the cruise on arrival day

Flight delays can cost the cruise. Keep it for a full day.

  • Trying to see both Ping'an and Dazhai

Choose one terrace area; the paths and transfers take time.

  • Ignoring rain

The karst is beautiful in mist, but river and trail closures happen. Keep a flexible day.

FAQ

Questions before you commit

Is 7 days enough for Guilin and Yangshuo?

Yes, with one night in Guilin, three in Yangshuo and two in Longji. It is a landscape trip, not a full Guangxi tour.

Should I take the Li River cruise or a bamboo raft?

The cruise is the classic Guilin–Yangshuo journey; bamboo rafts on the Yulong River are a shorter, quieter countryside experience. Do both if time allows.

How long is the transfer to Longji?

About 2.5–3 hours by road from Guilin or Yangshuo. The last section is winding; pack light and allow a full day.

Can I visit Longji as a day trip?

Possible but rushed. Staying one night gives you sunrise, village walks and a slower pace.

What is the best time to visit?

April–June for green terraces and water, September–October for clearer skies and harvest colours. Summer is hot and wet; winter is quiet but bare.

Is this route suitable for children?

Yes for active families, but the Longji paths and road transfer are challenging. Avoid the longest hikes and carry snacks.
