Imperial history, the Terracotta Army and the best food city on the classic circuit, with two strong rail legs and no wasted backtracking.
At a glance

Beijing → Xi'an → Chengdu
Overview
This route swaps Shanghai's skyline for Chengdu's teahouses and Sichuan kitchens. It suits travelers who care more about everyday food and living history than a polished riverfront finish. The order Beijing → Xi'an → Chengdu is efficient: each leg moves southwest, and Chengdu is a good place to end with a slower pace.
The plan below is a route, not a rigid schedule. Keep the order, but move a museum or a meal if weather, jet lag or a sold-out ticket changes the day. Every transfer includes a buffer.

Before you book
Do these in order. Entry eligibility and the hard-to-get tickets matter more than a cheaper hotel.
Confirm your visa-free or transit eligibility before booking, especially if you plan a day trip or a onward flight from Chengdu.
Entry rulesBeijing–Xi'an is 4.5–5.5 hours; Xi'an–Chengdu is 3–4 hours. Book both with your passport and keep a buffer on transfer days.
Rail planningPanda Base tickets are date-based and mornings are best. Terracotta Army tickets are timed and passport-linked.
Beijing: Dongcheng. Xi'an: inside the wall. Chengdu: Tianfu Square or near People's Park.
Where to stayChengdu's default spice level can be high. Set up Alipay/WeChat Pay and learn how to say 'not spicy' or 'less spicy'.
PaymentsDay by day
Each day has one main purpose. Transfer days are deliberately light; do not add a second city.

The imperial axis on foot.
Day 3 · Beijing
An early wall visit and a quiet evening.

Archaeology in the morning, the wall and old city in the evening.

One museum, then a 3–4 hour train southwest.

The pandas early, then teahouse life and a slow afternoon.

History, snacks and a performance in one compact day.
Day 9 · Chengdu
Choose a day trip or stay in the city and eat.
Day 10 · Chengdu
A short morning and a generous airport buffer.
Where to stay
A well-placed hotel saves more time than a cheaper room near the airport.
The imperial core and the Great Wall.
Stay: Dongcheng, near Line 2 or Line 5
Terracotta Army, city wall and old-city food.
Stay: Inside the city wall, near the South Gate
Pandas, teahouses and the strongest food culture on the route.
Stay: Tianfu Square or People's Park
What to eat
Book the one special meal; keep the rest spontaneous.
Choose a mild broth if needed; the dipping oil is part of the meal. Book at weekends.
A lunch rather than a banquet; ask for less spice if you are unsure.
Biangbiang noodles and roujiamo; eat where the noodles are made in front of you.
Getting around
The route assumes public transport plus Didi for the last mile. Book the long legs first.
High-speed rail, 4.5–5.5 hours. Book with your passport.
High-speed rail, 3–4 hours. A comfortable daytime leg; keep the evening free.
Metro plus Didi; the Panda Base is easiest by taxi/Didi or a metro-plus-shuttle combination.
TFU is far east; CTU is closer. Check which airport your flight uses before booking the last hotel night.
Budget
Prices change; use these as the categories to check, not a fixed daily total.
Three city-centre bases; Chengdu is usually better value than Beijing.
Two high-speed tickets; book early for daytime departures.
Chengdu can be cheap or expensive; street food and neighbourhood restaurants keep costs down.
Common mistakes
Four cities in 10 days turns the trip into transfers. Choose either Shanghai or Chengdu.
Pandas are active in the morning; a late arrival means heat, crowds and sleeping animals.
Ask for mild or less spicy, and keep a simple backup meal on the first night.
The airport is far from the centre; a late arrival plus a long transfer is a poor last day.

FAQ
Yes, if food and everyday culture matter more than skyline and museums. Chengdu is also a good value base, but it is less convenient for a final international flight than Shanghai.
Not strictly, but the site is more rewarding with a guide or audio guide. The pits are large and the signage is limited; allow at least 3 hours including transport.
Yes, by high-speed rail, but it is a full day with walking and transfers. Choose one if you want a slower pace or have an early flight the next day.
Yes for most first-time visitors. Go at opening, book the date-based ticket, and allow 3–4 hours. Manage expectations: pandas sleep a lot after the morning feeding.
It can be. Ask for 'less spicy' or 'not spicy', choose a mild broth for hotpot, and keep simple noodle or rice dishes as backup.
TFU is well east of the centre and the drive can take 45–70 minutes. CTU Shuangliu is closer. Check your terminal and airport before choosing the last hotel.
