Overview

Why this route works

This is a city-and-food route, not a greatest-hits tour. It works best for travelers who have already seen Beijing or Shanghai, or who want a shorter, more local first trip. Chengdu and Chongqing are close enough for a 1.5-hour train, but different enough to justify both: Chengdu is relaxed and green, Chongqing is vertical, loud and best after dark.

The plan below is a route, not a rigid schedule. Keep the order, but move a museum or a meal if weather, jet lag or a sold-out ticket changes the day. Every transfer includes a buffer.

This route suits you if

  • You want pandas, teahouses and Sichuan food without a grand tour.
  • You are happy to start in Chengdu and finish in Chongqing.
  • You prefer late dinners and city views to early museum starts.

Choose another route if

  • It is your first China trip and you also want the Great Wall or Terracotta Army.
  • You dislike spicy food, smoke or steep, crowded streets.

Before you book

The booking order that prevents most problems

Do these in order. Entry eligibility and the hard-to-get tickets matter more than a cheaper hotel.

1

Check the two-airport detail

Chengdu has TFU and CTU; Chongqing uses CKG. Book an open-jaw ticket into Chengdu and out of Chongqing to avoid backtracking.

Entry rules
2

Book the panda base early

Panda Base tickets are date-based and the morning slots are best. Book with the passport you will carry.

3

Book the Chengdu–Chongqing train

High-speed trains take about 1–1.5 hours. Book a mid-morning departure so you still have a Chongqing evening.

Rail planning
4

Stay near food and metro

Chengdu: Tianfu Square or People's Park. Chongqing: Jiefangbei or near a Line 2 station.

Where to stay
5

Prepare for spice and hills

Chongqing is steep and humid. Pack comfortable shoes and ask for less spice in Chengdu if you need it.

Health and safety

Day by day

6-day plan

Each day has one main purpose. Transfer days are deliberately light; do not add a second city.

01

Day 1 · Chengdu

Arrive in Chengdu and find a teahouse

Land, check in and let the city slow you down.

Arrival
From TFU or CTU, take the metro or a taxi/Didi to Tianfu Square or People's Park. Check in and keep the registration slip.
Afternoon
People's Park and Heming Teahouse: order tea, sit for an hour and watch the city. This is the point of Chengdu, not a warm-up.
Evening
A first Sichuan meal near the hotel; ask for less spice if needed. Walk a little, then sleep at local time.
02

Day 2 · Chengdu

Pandas, Wuhou Shrine and Jinli

The pandas early, then history and snacks.

Morning
Panda Base at opening; pandas are most active before the heat. Allow 3–4 hours including the transfer.
Afternoon
Wuhou Shrine and Jinli; see the shrine first, then walk Jinli for snacks and tea.
Evening
Sichuan hotpot or mapo tofu. Book a popular place or go early; queues build after 18:30.
03

Day 3 · Chengdu

Qingcheng Mountain or a Chengdu food day

Choose a day trip or stay local and eat.

Option A
Qingcheng Mountain and Dujiangyan by high-speed rail; a full day with walking and cable cars. Check weather and ticket rules.
Option B
A cooking class, a wet market and a long lunch; add the Sichuan opera in the evening. Better if you want a slower trip.
Tip
Do not try to fit Qingcheng, Dujiangyan and a city dinner into one day.
04

Day 4 · Chengdu → Chongqing

Train to Chongqing and Hongya Cave

A short rail leg and the city's best night view.

Morning
A slow breakfast, then the high-speed train to Chongqing (about 1–1.5 hours). Check in at Jiefangbei or near Line 2.
Afternoon
Walk the Jiefangbei area and the riverfront; rest before the evening crowds.
Evening
Hongya Cave after dark. Arrive before sunset for the lighting, then eat nearby rather than at the busiest riverfront restaurants.
05

Day 5 · Chongqing

Liziba, Ciqikou and the Yangtze cableway

The iconic monorail, the old town and a river crossing.

Morning
Liziba station to see the monorail pass through the building; go early for a clear view. Then Ciqikou old town for lanes and snacks.
Afternoon
Three Gorges Museum or the Yangtze River Cableway. Choose one; the cableway queues are long at sunset.
Evening
Chongqing hotpot or xiaomian. The city is best on foot after dark, but use Didi for steep returns.
06

Day 6 · Chongqing

Depart from Chongqing

A final bowl of noodles and a generous airport buffer.

Morning
Breakfast at a local noodle shop, then check out. CKG is about 30–45 minutes from Jiefangbei by metro or taxi.
Airport
Arrive 3 hours before an international flight. Keep the passport and any exit documents accessible.

Where to stay

Choose the area before the hotel

A well-placed hotel saves more time than a cheaper room near the airport.

Chengdu

3 nights

Pandas, teahouses and the most relaxed food scene in China.

Stay: Tianfu Square or People's Park

Chongqing

2 nights

Vertical cityscapes, hotpot and the best night views on the route.

Stay: Jiefangbei or near Line 2

What to eat

Meals worth planning around

Book the one special meal; keep the rest spontaneous.

Chengdu hotpot

Choose a mild broth if needed; the dipping oil is part of the meal. Go early or book.

Chongqing xiaomian

A breakfast bowl of spicy noodles; ask for less chilli if you are unsure.

Mapo tofu and dan dan noodles

Order at a neighbourhood restaurant rather than a hotel dining room.

Getting around

Transfers, trains and city transport

The route assumes public transport plus Didi for the last mile. Book the long legs first.

Chengdu arrival

TFU is far east; CTU is closer. Metro or Didi to the centre; allow 45–70 minutes from TFU.

Chengdu → Chongqing

High-speed rail, about 1–1.5 hours. Book a mid-morning train to keep the Chongqing evening.

Chongqing city

Metro plus Didi; the hills make walking between sights slower than the map suggests.

Chongqing departure

CKG is 30–45 minutes from Jiefangbei by metro or taxi; allow extra at peak times.

Budget

What drives the cost

Prices change; use these as the categories to check, not a fixed daily total.

Hotels

Two city-centre bases; Chongqing river-view rooms cost more but the view is the attraction.

Food

The main spend. Hotpot and a few special meals; street food is cheap.

Transport

One short rail ticket plus metro/Didi; no internal flights.

Common mistakes

What to avoid on this route

  • Treating Chongqing as a day trip

The night view and the hills deserve at least two nights.

  • Arriving at the panda base late

Pandas sleep after the morning feeding; an early slot is worth the alarm.

  • Underestimating the hills

Chongqing is vertical. Wear grip shoes and use the metro/Didi rather than planning long walks between sights.

  • Ordering the hottest broth

Ask for mild or a split pot; the oil and chilli build quickly.

FAQ

Questions before you commit

Is 6 days enough for Chengdu and Chongqing?

Yes for a food-and-city trip. You get three nights in Chengdu and two in Chongqing, with one short train. It is not enough to add a major landscape region.

Is Chongqing worth visiting after Chengdu?

Yes if you want night views, hotpot and a very different vertical city. If you prefer temples and teahouses, stay longer in Chengdu instead.

Do I need to book the panda base?

Yes, book the date-based ticket in advance and go at opening. The official ticket is passport-linked; avoid resellers.

Is the Yangtze cableway worth the queue?

It is a short ride with a good river view, but the queue can be long. Go early or skip it if your time is tight; the Hongya Cave and Liziba views are free.

Can I do this route without spicy food?

Yes, but you will need to ask for mild or non-spicy dishes. Hotpot can be split; noodle shops can usually reduce the chilli.

Which airport should I fly out of?

Chongqing Jiangbei (CKG) for an open-jaw ticket. If you return to Chengdu, the 1.5-hour train is easy but adds a half-day.
